D8 - An Introductory Summary

  • Vastly improved internationalization
  • Views (improved and optimized and) in core
  • Redesigned services including using Symfony2 components for HTTP et. al.
  • Twig templating
  • Embrace HTML5 and be friendly with mobile, and responsive
  • Configuration management and an architecture that separates config from content

Of course, the Drupal Community isn't the only place to give back. It's a complex world, and there are as many worthy causes as their are melodies, with most being served by multiple charitable organizations. Here are a few of those that strike a 7th chord with me.
